Breathing

Breathing taken for granted
Until the breaths are short
Loneliness entangles me
Tendrils coiled around my throat
Implacably; suffer the air
In desperation, needed
To breathe,
Until the breaths
Are short again.

Broken door, stuck ajar
Wind trilling through swollen jams
Open the door, enter loneliness
Enter air, enter despair,
But breathing freely again
Breathing taken for granted
Cords uncoiled around my neck
Until the breaths
Are short again.

Loneliness is a listing ship,
Short breath the ship aground
Anxious for the tide, to float again
To swell the lungs with cold, moist breaths
To breathe again, without thinking
Dwelling again on emptiness
Breathing taken for granted
Until the breaths
Are short again.

Shadow before me, shadow behind
The breath of life, the breath gone
Let me go down with loneliness
But still breathing breaths
Lungs suffusing with air
Life out the door soon,
Though I am not aware
Even when the breaths
No longer are
There.
