Every nice day
the children of San Francisco
walk through a tunnel under the Great Highway
that comes out on the beach
This tunnel is public property
which the paternal City has provided
for the safeguarding of its children
on their way to play in the sand
For months now I have been wondering
just how long it was going to take
the City Fathers of San Francisco
to get around to sponging off
the dirty words chalked all over the walls of this tunnel
and I had come to the conclusion
that nobody gave a damn
or at least nobody official
I now hear that to save the young from pollution
the San Francisco police have raided a bookshop
and arrested some people for selling to adults
literature containing the very same words in small print
that escape their attention when chalked large on public walls
where thousands of children pass by
All of which constrains me to comment
"merde alors" (Pardon my French)
